Each year, the ASLTIP (Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice) Therapy Talks conference brings together independent speech and language therapists from across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales for a day of insight, collaboration and professional development. Hosted in London, this much-anticipated event is known for its expert-led sessions on neurodiversity, clinical best practice and innovative therapy approaches—alongside invaluable opportunities to connect with peers across the field.
This year’s event was no exception. It was a vibrant, idea-filled day packed with passionate practitioners, meaningful conversations and fresh thinking about how best to support children’s communication and language development.

An Author on the RoadAuthor Marielle Bayliss attended the conference, bringing the Neurons Series directly to the professionals who use resources like these every day.
Reflecting on the experience, she shared:
“It was a pleasure to meet so many leading experts and passionate practitioners.”
From the moment the doors opened, there was a real buzz around the books. Therapists were keen to explore resources that not only support children with speech, language and communication needs, but do so in a way that is engaging, reassuring and easy to understand. One of the standout takeaways for Marielle—gathered through conversations around her stand—was the power of play in speech and language therapy. Speaking with practitioners throughout the day, she learned how creating low-pressure, fun environments can help children build confidence and develop communication skills more naturally.
It was a perfect fit with the Neurons Series, which is designed to make complex topics—like autism and ADHD—accessible through warm storytelling and engaging illustrations.
There were also plenty of conversations around the role of picture books in therapy, especially the importance of repetition in supporting oral language development. The structure and rhythm of the Neurons Series make it particularly well-suited for this kind of use—something that didn’t go unnoticed by the therapists attending.

A Sold-Out SuccessOne of the most exciting moments of the day? The books didn’t stay on the table for long.
The Neurons Series written by Marielle Bayliss (Frog's Bog series) and illustrated by Kellyanne Thorne, received an overwhelmingly positive response, with therapists recognising both its practical value in sessions and its appeal to children and families.Feedback from the day included:
“The illustrations are so fabulous, I can't wait to get into the written content more!”
“Have read through a couple and they are just at the right level for the children I see. ”
“I can’t wait to read them!”
For Marielle, it was not just about sharing the books—it was about listening, learning and gathering ideas:“I also came away with a few brilliant ideas for more books in the series. Watch this space!”
Why Books Like These Matter
A key theme that emerged throughout the day was accessibility.
Many families struggle to find high-quality, appropriate resources—whether that’s due to limited availability in libraries, difficulty navigating what’s out there, or simply not knowing what to trust. As a result, parents and carers often turn to speech and language therapists and other professionals for recommendations.
That’s where the Neurons Series makes a real difference.
These books are:- Accessible and engaging, helping children understand their own experiences
- Professionally informed, giving practitioners confidence to recommend them
- Reassuring for families, offering clear, supportive explanations of neurodiversity
- Sensibly priced to help professionals make the most of their budgets
They’re not just books to read—they’re tools to support conversations, build understanding and empower children. -
