Millie’s Field tells the story of Millie, a young girl waiting for her father to return from the war. As it becomes increasingly clear that he may not return, Millie struggles with her mother and schoolmates and runs away to a place where she finds solace: her field.

One day, she discovers a compass with her name on it in the field. Intrigued by this unusual find, she shows it to her mother, who explains that a famous navigator called Amelia Earhart landed in that very field many years before. Her mother finally explains to Millie that her daddy, like Amelia Earhart, has gone missing.

After learning that Amelia Earhart also disappeared like her dad, Millie feels guilty for keeping the compass and posts it back to Amelia’s family. But a few days later, Millie receives the compass back, along with a letter from Amelia Earhart’s mother telling her to keep it. Her daughter, she explains, left it there for Millie to find—a reminder to always be strong.

Anthony Brophy is one of Ireland’s leading actors and writers, with an extensive career in theatre, film and television across Europe and the US. His screen credits include In the Name of the Father, CSI, Penny Dreadful and The Tudors, in which he played Eustace Chapuys for four years. As a writer, his first play, Chicane, was shortlisted for the Stewart Parker Award, while his first two novels were shortlisted for the Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair. Anthony has also worked extensively in theatre in education and is based in Skerries, County Dublin.

About the illustrator:
Margaret Anne Suggs is a children’s book illustrator who has published over a dozen books in four languages. Originally from the American Deep South, she moved to Dublin to study at the National College of Art and Design, where she completed MAs in Visual Communications and History of Design and Applied Arts. She serves on the boards of Illustrators Ireland and IBBY Ireland and lectures part-time at Ballyfermot College, where she founded the Higher National Diploma illustration course.
