Content

In Issue 25 of Tudor Places, we explore how Tudor buildings and landscapes projected power and prestige. From aristocratic deer parks and episcopal palaces to guildhalls, villages and country estates, our contributors uncover the histories behind them.

We consider the active role of elite Tudor women in hunting, falconry, and creating and managing deer parks and we look at the varied forms and functions of the guildhalls, multipurpose buildings that brought communities together for worship, government, trade and association.

We visit the pretty village of Shere, in Surrey, with connections to the House of York, the wives of Henry VIII and the Bray and Audley families, and explore the history of Winchester Palace in Southwark, the London residence of the bishops of Winchester; a once-great medieval palace that is now a riverside ruin.

We also examine two monuments to the wealth and status of Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich: Leez Priory, his magnificent country house, and his striking tomb in Felsted Church, Essex.

Sarah Morris takes us on a three-day tour through the stunning scenery of North West Wales, combining visits to castles and townhouses with a stop in Penmynydd, the home of Henry VII’s Tudor forefathers. In Living at Old Hall, Brigitte Webster details her efforts to uncover the surviving historiography of the hall, and in Last Place, James Wright shares some of his favourite Tudor locations.
