Work Experience at Graffeg with Lauren Powell

Hi there - I’m Lauren, an English Literature and Language student at Cardiff University. I am currently on a Work Experience placement with Graffeg. I am assisting with Graffeg’s social media, particularly TikTok, and helping with some marketing too. It is great to be working with Graffeg’s wonderful authors and illustrators, as well as learning from an amazing team.

I am proud to be working for Graffeg as it is rewarding to be a part of an ever-growing industry. The variation in Graffeg’s publications means that I get to work with a range of genres, from beautiful non-fiction titles to humorous and thoughtful children’s fiction. Each Graffeg book is so beautifully presented in a way that makes them special and unique.

So far, I have had the opportunity to help with some proof reading, editing, marketing, and sales despite my short time here. The great thing about working for an independent publisher is that I have the chance to experience and help with a range of different tasks. There are opportunities to be critical, creative, and strategic - regardless of the task required. Every day is different, too, which keeps the work interesting.

From my very first day at Graffeg, I was instantly welcomed into a kind and caring team. Each person has been happy to help or answer my questions (there are a lot)! Each role in publishing is also equally as important; there is so much collaboration between our team and it has been interesting to see how ideas can develop and change. I look forward to being part of this journey, and I hope that throughout my experience that I will have a wide understanding of many aspects of publishing. I have learned so much already, and I know that this will develop as I continue my placement.

Most of all, I am excited to have fun and enjoy this experience. Beginning a placement can feel intimidating at times, but I am ready to embrace every opportunity and make the most of each experience. There is something magical and fascinating about the publishing industry, and I look forward to developing my skills and experience with Graffeg.
