This is the story of an astonishing transformation as Wales entered the twenty-first century embracing a new democratic direction. The Senedd, designed by architect Richard Rogers, rose as the country’s distinctive ultramodern forum, the expression of the people’s voices and diversity. Now available in this new compact edition, Senedd documents the rise of Cardiff as a city and place of government through to the concepts, challenges and final achievements of the Senedd building itself, superbly photographed by Andrew Molyneux.

Trevor Fishlock’s rigorously researched account provides an extensive background, highlighting not only the unique design of the building and the process of its completion but also the even greater significance of what it continues to represent for Wales. The book also includes a conversation conducted by Fishlock with the late architect Richard Rogers and firm partner Ivan Harbour on their vision for the project and its execution.

The Author

Trevor Fishlock is a writer and broadcaster who reported on Wales for The Times in the 1970s, wrote from more than sixty countries as a foreign correspondent, was The Times correspondent in India and New York and The Daily Telegraph bureau chief in Moscow. He won the International Reporter o f the Year prize in the British Press Awards. Trevor has written and presented 130 television programmes on life, history and landscape in Wales, including the long-running Wild Tracks, for which he won a Bafta. He is the author of books about Wales, India, America and Russia: Conquerors of Time is a narrative of nineteenth-century world exploration, while In This Place is the story of Wales commissioned by the National Library of Wales as its centenary volume. A taste for salt water led him to sail twice across the North Atlantic and also across the Southern Ocean from Cape Town to Melbourne. He lives in Cardiff.

Introducing the significance of the Senedd building, Trevor Fishlocke states: ‘Adventurous sea-wave cedar curves suggest confidence. Crystal walls affirm transparency of government. From this plinth and promontory Wales looks the world in

the eye. Given its embodiment of two concepts, a visionary architectural flight and an all too human arena of government, the Senedd was inevitably forged in passion and furious argument. No one said it would be easy. As an assembly and

crossroads of all Wales this is a new democracy at work. And the work is hard. The clear meaning of the Senedd is that it is Our Place and the future is up to us to shape.’
